Polymerix Technologies

Advancing Polymer Science for Medical Devices and Commercial Applications

Boston, MA  ·  Founded 2020

Who We Are

Polymerix Technologies is a Boston-based startup founded in 2020 by Dr. Anuj Bellare and Dr. Bruce Carvalho — two scientists and engineers with deep roots in polymer science, biomedical materials, and medical device development. Our company is focused on translating cutting-edge polymer chemistry into real-world products that improve patient outcomes and extend the performance of industrial materials.

Our company brings together decades of academic research and industry experience to develop novel crosslinking and antioxidant technologies based on diazirine chemistry — a platform with transformative potential across medical implants, tissue engineering, packaging, and beyond.

What We Do

Polymerix has developed a proprietary family of diazirine-based compounds — small molecules that, when activated by heat or UV light, form permanent chemical bonds with virtually any material containing C–H, N–H, or O–H groups.

Crosslink Polymers

Our diazirine crosslinkers bond directly to polymer chains and release only nitrogen gas — no toxic residues to remove. Ideal for UHMWPE used in joint replacement prostheses.

Non-leaching Antioxidants

Antioxidant-diazirine compounds chemically graft onto polymers, tissues, and device surfaces — eliminating the leaching risk of conventional additives.

Bond Dissimilar Materials

Multifunctional diazirine compounds act as molecular glues, bonding UHMWPE to metals, ceramics, bone cement, or tissue for implant fixation and composites.

Broad Applicability

The same chemistry works across synthetic polymers, biological macromolecules, tissues, and industrial surfaces — from medical implants to aerospace composites.

Intellectual Property   Our technology platform is protected by filed patents covering diazirine monomers, polymer compositions, antioxidant-diazirine compounds, and methods for their use in medical and industrial applications.

Our Focus Areas

Our Founders

Anuj Bellare, PhD

Co-founder & President

PhD in Chemical Engineering (Polymer Science) from MIT; postdoctoral training at Princeton. Former faculty at Harvard Medical School and Director of the Orthopedic Nanotechnology Laboratory at Brigham & Women's Hospital, where his research focused on crosslinked UHMWPE and bone cement for joint replacements. Named inventor on multiple patents with extensive publications on polyethylene wear, fracture toughness, and antioxidant stabilization. Previously co-founded Vayu Global Health Innovations, whose neonatal respiratory device received FDA Emergency Use Authorization in 2020.

Bruce Carvalho, PhD

Co-founder & Chief of Technology

PhD in Materials Science & Engineering from MIT; BS in Physics from Haverford College. Over 25 years of experience in biomedical device development — from microfluidic diagnostics and centrifugal assay platforms to polymer processing and medical consumables. Engineering leadership at Gamera Bioscience, Tecan, Living Microsystems, and DxTech. Named inventor on multiple patents in microfluidics and surface sanitization. Has served as principal investigator and co-investigator on completed Navy and NIH NHLBI SBIR grants.

Partner with Polymerix We are actively seeking research collaborators and co-development partners, and investors who share our vision of better materials for both medical and non-medical applications.
